JELLY'S BACK IN TOWN
At Bergamo Jazz '96 Ensemble Mobile proposed to M° Giorgio Gaslini, a jazz musician of international fame, the composition of a piece of music inspired by Jelly Roll Morton, a protagonist in the history of jazz. That was the birth of "Jelly's back to town": a sort of musical fable. Jelly comes back to New York nowadays on his Torpedo and, together with his old friend Billy, discovers the music is changed but still many people owe him a lot. That's why he decides to go back to heaven. The suit features three of the best soloists of the Italian scene: Gianluigi Trovesi, Tino Tracanna, Paolo Fresu, and Gaslini himself, who conducts and plays the piano. The choice of the theme is not casual but it expresses the common interest to mix the latest jazz experiences and researches with the most popular and authentic tradition of the Afroamerican music, well represented by the figure of Jelly Roll Morton, one of those who started it. The set consists in some re-arrangements of his songs and of old French and Creole songs, some original songs by Gaslini and Giuseppe Verdi's Miserere. |
